Our brains release oxytocin, "the feel-good" hormone in the brain, when we pet our dogs and cats, according to Pets are good for you. Our pets can have a wonderful effect on our mood, even possibly our goldfish. A study showed that having a fish tank at a nursing home improved appetites. Whether that was due to the fish or the water, the jury is still out. Read the full article at over at Psychology Today.
For more on this subject read Made for Each Other: The Biology of the Human-Animal Bond
by Meg Daley Olmert who explains why the brain chemistry humans and animals trigger in each other has such a profound effect on our mental and physical well being.

According to Americans spend more on pets than beer or movies | Quartz, here in the U.S. we spend an average of about $500 annually on our pets, equating to 1% of their annual budget.
Overall Americans spent $61.4 billion on their charges, almost twice as much as global spending on movie tickets last year, with heavier outlay in our rural areas.
The most pampered American pets live with Baby Boomers and childless couples, and single pet owners and single parents are more likely to skimp on kitty and doggy spending.
Owners most likely to buy for dogs (say, little booties on Buddy) are ages 55 to 64, and couples without children, a new analysis by the Bureau of Labor Statistics shows. They spend hundreds of dollars more than those in their 20s and 30s.

Many moons ago away from home at a summer evening party, we received a panicked call from our baby sitter that our English Setter had bitten our toddler on the face. (It ended well.)
Roughly half of all children are at some point bitten by a dog, since they don't read the danger signals. Misconceptions abound when it comes to doggy body language even among adults.
This graphic How Not to Greet a Dog shows common body language mistakes people make around dogs, as well as showing the "correct" way to greet an animal.

Hot summer weather is upon us. Today while out and about, we met a beautiful young Golden Retriever who, but for an expensive trip to the emergency vet, almost died of heat stroke over the weekend. Bob had collapsed at the beach after 10 minutes.
Turns out Bob the Golden does not eat or drink when home alone--dogs can be so sensitive. That day, he was then whisked off for a romp on the beach apparently without refreshments.
His near-miss is a welcome reminder to be more tuned in to our pets, their body language and their needs, especially in hot humid summer conditions. A pet who seems happy on the surface may upon closer inspection actually be a bit frenzied.
The solution is to remember to bring along water for pets on outings, no matter how close by. There are travel water dispensers
to carry your own water supply and dog travel bowls
if you do have a source of water at your destination. A gadget such as this Handi-Drink Dog Water Bottle
could make the difference between life and death at worst, not to mention the 3 or 4 figure vet bill.

Have a puppy? If you do, or plan to down the road, stock up on food targeted for puppies
, especially if you choose a large or giant breed puppy. Pet lovers tend to have strong opinions on pet care so it's easy for us to reflexively pooh-pooh feeding advice, especially when we are counting our pennies and have lived with many dogs.
However, new guidelines help us avoid debilitating bone diseases that cause suffering and even cut precious years off our pets' lives. Large and giant breed puppies should be fed a quality puppy formula
until the end of their growth period when you transition to adult formula
